How to Make a Mars Sculpture

How to Make a Mars Sculpture thumbnail
The spherical shape of Mars makes it an easy subject for sculpture.

Mars planet sculptures come in one shape but many sizes. A simple version can be an excellent project for schoolchildren; an experienced sculptor might want to tackle a more detailed version. You can suspend your sculpture from a wire or mount it on a base. You can use a variety of materials, from paper mache to stone or clay. Regardless of your chosen media or presentation method, every Mars sculpture shares basic design components.

Instructions

    • 1

Sculpt your media of choice into a sphere. Whether using paper mache, clay or harder materials, work the surface into a balanced, spherical shape.

    • 2

Make indentations on the surface of your sphere. With clay or softer media, press into the sphere to create small craters. For harder surfaces, remove small areas of the surface to make craters and indentations.

    • 3

Mix orange and red paint to create a bright hue. Apply this color to entire surface of the sculpture.

    • 4

Apply pure red paint to a few areas of the sphere. Use a clean brush to blend the edges of the pure red into the orange-red hue. The color variation helps create visual interest.

    • 5

Fix your sculpture to its base or hanger.

Tips & Warnings

  • Study an image of the planet Mars before you begin your sculpture to guide your work.

  • When selecting paint, choose the proper paint and preparation techniques for your particular media. Allow proper drying of wet surfaces before painting. Since oil paints deteriorate many unprepared surfaces, including paper, choose acrylic paints for your sculpture. These paints may be applied directly to most surfaces, such as paper mache, clay and wood.

  • If using wet clay for your sculpture, do not paint until it dries thoroughly. You may air dry clay or fire it in a kiln, but it must be free of moisture before painting.
