How to Make a Walkman Costume
A Walkman is a fun and simple costume to make for those who enjoy weird and anachronistic relics of the past. The Walkman made its debut in 1979, when Sony released the first personal stereo tape deck to the public. According to Time Magazine, the cassette player sold a total of 200 million units and changed the way people experienced music. The Walkman, though functional and cutting-edge at the time, has since been replaced with more savvy technologies, such as MP3 and portable CD players.

1
Cut out a long rectangle from a roll of foam. The piece should be long enough to cover from your shoulders to about your knees times two. It will be worn like a sandwich board over your shoulders. Cut out a hole in the middle of the foam, so your head can fit through it.

2
Paint the design of your favorite Walkman onto the front and backsides of your foam piece. Most cassette players are divided into the plastic cover and the cassette case. Above the cassette case, paint numbers for radio stations with a vertical line to represent the tuner.

Use the cutout letters to spell out "Sony" or another tape player brand name. Glue the letters onto the foam. If you want to be exact, find the logo online, enlarge it and print it out on adhesive paper

Trim foam blocks with scissors and round them into oversized ear buds. Cover the ear buds in orange pantyhose or fabric. Glue the giant ear buds to a set of real headphones, so you can wear them over your ears.

5
Wear the other set of orange tights, layered with a pair of brightly colored legwarmers. Wear some 1980s style tennis shoes. Finish the look off with a pair of sunglasses.
