How to Use a SMART Board for a Lesson
SMART boards are becoming an increasingly popular technology in the classroom. A SMART board uses technology to create an interactive experience that the whole class can see. The equivalent of the black board and chalk, interactive white boards employ a touch-screen facility that projects onto the white board from a projector. The computer, attached to the SMART board, shows anything on its computer screen onto the interactive white board, from where lessons can be conducted.

1
Plan your lesson as you normally would using either PowerPoint, Excel or a program of your choice. Use graphics, pictures, graphs and text to create the lesson structure and sections of the lesson.
-
2
Align the interactive white board correctly with the projector, if it is not already situated properly. If the SMART board is out of alignment with its projector you will find that when you "press" or write on the board it will not be correctly calibrated and the "press" or writing will not be where you expect it to be.

3
Pick up an interactive pen that accompanies your SMART board. Sit the students in positions where everyone can see the white board clearly. Advise students to not look directly into the light from the projector---it is extremely bright and can hurt their eyes.
-
4
Set up the start of the lesson by accessing it on the computer and beginning the PowerPoint presentation, opening the Excel Worksheet or other program you have chosen to work from.
-
5
Press the screen at the appropriate places where you need to point out a detail or move the presentation forward. Your SMART pens will come in different colors, so use those, if necessary, to illustrate the main points of the lesson. You can draw on the white board and it will not affect the computer presentation that is running.
-
6
Easily erase any mistakes by using the interactive erase technology. You may have an erase pen or use the "Ctrl Z" shortcut, or another method depending on your current program and facilities.
-
7
Guide the students through the lesson using the presentation and lesson structure. Any questions that they direct toward you can be answered with the interactive board pen, as you write or draw examples on the board.
