How to Protect Old an Chenille Bedspread

Take a delicate approach when caring for an old Chenille bedspread.

The word Chenille means "caterpillar" in French. A Chenille bedspread gets its name because it contains special fabric lengths that look like long caterpillars. The fabric piles used to create Chenille are frequently made from cotton. However, Chenille fabric can also be made of rayon or acrylic. Chenille became a popular bedding choice in the 1930s and vintage bedspreads are often found at antique shops. While Chenille bedspreads clearly have staying power, they do require special care and a gentle touch.

Instructions

1. Protect the bedspread from wear. Do not lie down or sit on the top of the Chenille and fold the top of the bedspread down at night.

2. Stitch up any holes or tears before washing and pretreat stains using a store-bought stain remover.

3. Wash the Chenille bedspread alone in the washing machine, using the delicate cycle and cold water. Use a gentle detergent and do not bleach.

4. Dry the bedspread alone in the dryer using low heat.

5. Hang the bedspread in a closet for storage. Place a block of cedar on the closet shelf to keep moths away.

• Braid any fringed sections together before you wash the bedspread so they don't tangle.
