How to Run a Clothing Give Away

How to Run a Clothing Give Away thumbnail
You should donate clothing as often as you can.

As many as 600,000 families in the United States are homeless and could use your help. If you've ever wanted to give back to the community, one of the easiest ways to help is to organize a clothing giveaway. You can start by looking in your own closets and then get your community involved as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Go through your own closets to find clothes you don't wear. If you have any items that have been lying around for years in the hopes that you'll one day fit into them again, let them go. There is someone out there who could use them.

    • 2

Ask your family to also raid their own closets for possible donations. Items that are especially useful are coats, sweaters and business suits. Often there are people who can't go to job interviews because they can't afford a suit, making it even harder to get out of their situation.

    • 3

Go door-to-door in your neighborhood and ask people to donate clothes. Either let them collect some items on the spot, or give them the option of collecting things and sending them to your house. Ask them to also donate any mismatched socks they may have so they can be put in a bin. Mismatched socks are better than no socks at all.

    • 4

Go through the clothes you have collected leave out items that are torn or stained. Wash the rest before putting them in bags.

    • 5

Contact your local charities such as the Salvation Army, Vietnam Veterans of America, Goodwill Industries and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Some of these organizations will pick up the clothing at your home. You can also drop them off at your local Salvation Army or Goodwill store.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many donation centers give tax receipts, but you can also include a self-addressed, stamped envelope so that any charity you donate clothes to can send you a receipt.

  • Don't leave any boxes or bags outside a drop-box. Make sure to place them safely inside so they don't get picked up and sold.
