How to Hide the Trash Can Icon

Regardless of which version of the Windows operating system you have, the trash can (also known as the "Recycle Bin") icon is a default item on all desktop computers. With the trash can, you can drag and drop items you want to discard directly into the trash. If for whatever reason you wish to hide the trash can icon, it can be done with the Windows "Group Policy Editor" feature and a few clicks of the mouse.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the "Start" button located in the bottom-left corner of the desktop menu and select the "Run" option from the pull-up menu.

    • 2

Type the code "GPEDIT.MSC" into the text box and press the "Enter" key on your keyboard to launch your operating system's "Group Policy Editor."

    • 3

Click the "User Configuration" tab and double-click on the "Adminstrative Templates" icon. Scroll down and select the "Desktop" folder.

    • 4

Scroll down within the "Desktop" folder until you see a "Remove Recycle Bin Icon From Desktop" option. Right-click the option and click on "Properties" from the drop-down menu. This will prompt a pop-up window to open up.

    • 5

Select the "Enabled" option. This will enable the removal of the Recycle Bin icon from the desktop. (In other words, it will "hide" it.)

    • 6

Click the "Apply" button in the bottom-right corner of the window to apply your settings and then click the "OK" button to finish and exit the window.
