How to Shape Vinyl

Inspiration for a craft project can come from anywhere, and even an old vinyl record can be made into an attractive bowl. This can be done with an old vinyl record that is scratched or destined for the trash bin. The vinyl must be heated in an oven to make it pliable.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the "Selector" dial on your oven to "Bake." Turn the "Oven Control" dial to "200." Preheat to 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 2

Place a metal bowl upside down on a cookie sheet. Balance the record on the top -- formerly bottom -- of the flipped bowl.

    • 3

Open the oven door and place the cookie sheet inside. Heat the vinyl record between 2 and 6 minutes. The record should begin to soften and start to bend.

    • 4

Remove the cookie sheet from the oven and place it on a pot holder.

    • 5

Turn the metal bowl right side up. Set the heated vinyl record on top and apply pressure to mold the record to the shape of the bowl.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once it is removed from the oven, the vinyl record will cool within 30 seconds. If it has cooled, place the vinyl record back in the oven.
