How to Italicize Text in Gmail Chat

Google's Gmail email client includes a chat feature that you can use to instant message your Gmail, iGoogle, orkut and Google Talk contacts. You can also sign in to your AOL instant messenger account and chat with your AIM contacts through Gmail chat. A very basic messaging system, Google chat has a limited number of emoticons and few ways to alter the style of the chat text, but you can use italics in a chat message.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a user from your list of chat contacts to open a chat window.

    • 2

Type an underscore, or "_," in the chat text field.

    • 3

Type the word or sentence that you want italicized.

    • 4

Type another underscore at the end of the text you want italicized.

    • 5

Type the remainder of your message.

    • 6

Press the "Enter" key on your keyboard to send a chat message with italics.
