How to Delete Something Currently Downloading on an iPhone

Versions prior to 4.3 of iOS, the iPhone's onboard operating system, did not allow you to cancel an application download before it was complete. If you began the download of a large app by mistake, there was no way to cancel the transfer and delete the app until it was fully downloaded and installed. As of version 4.3, however, this is no longer a problem. You cancel an app download just as you would delete any app.

  • Ensure that you have the latest version of iOS, the iPhone's onboard operating system. From the Home screen, tap "Settings," then "General," then "About," and look at the number under "Version." If it's lower than 4.3.1, update to the current version. Connect your iPhone to your computer via its USB cable and follow the instructions in iTunes.

  • Hold your finger on an item on your home screen until the icons begin to wiggle. This is the same mode you use to rearrange the icons on your home screen.

  • Tap the "X" at the top of the icon for the app you want to delete, then tap "Delete."
