How to Clean a Metal Lamp

Melynda Sorrels

Dirty lamps are commonly overlooked in house cleaning rituals, although over time dust particles build up into an unpleasant coating that clings to the lamp and refuses to let go. A dirty lamp can easily become an eyesore in any given room.

Clean a Metal Lamp

Cleaning metal lamps is slightly different than cleaning any other lamp, but this simple chore can enhance a room in minimal time.

  1. Unplug the lamp from the wall and set it on a towel near the sink.

  2. Unscrew the light bulb and set it aside. Remove the lampshade.

  3. Fill the sink with warm water and add 2 tablespoons of a mild dish soap.

  4. Soak a soft clean cloth in the water and wring it out well.

  5. Wipe the lamp with the cloth. Rinse out the cloth in the sink and continue to wipe the base of the cord until it is clean.

  6. Use paper towels or a clean dry cloth to dry the lamp.

  7. Fill the sink or the bathtub with enough warm water to cover the lampshade and add enough soap to make the water sudsy.

  8. Set the lampshade in the water, Use a soft bristle brush to gently scrub the lampshade clean.

  9. Rinse the lampshade by dipping it in clean clear water two or three times.

  10. Hang the lampshade to dry by tying a string to the middle of the frame. Suspend it over the shower curtain bar or on a clothesline until completely dry.

  11. Tip

If the lampshade is partially wet but not dripping, you can put it back on the lamp and turn the lamp on to dry it.

    Warning

Use caution not to get the cord or the socket wet as this may damage the lamp.
