How to Store Your Digital SLR Camera in Its Case?

Knowing how to properly store your digital SLR camera, lenses and gear is an important part of being a photographer. You might want to transport your gear to a variety of different locations for shooting purposes. Learning how to store your camera in its case will help you avoid costly accidents and damages that can occur while you travel, or when the camera is not being used.

Things You'll Need

  • Camera bag
  • Cleaning cloth
  • Lens caps
  • Disassemble the camera from the lens that is currently attached to it. To reduce the amount of dust that enters into the camera, point the camera downwards while you remove the lens. Immediately place a cap over the hole to prevent dust from entering. Remove any lenses when packing the camera because this reduces pressure on the camera's mount.

  • Place the camera in its designated hole in the padded camera case. Place the camera in sideways, or with the LCD screen facing downwards, to prevent it from being scratched.

  • Be sure the lenses are all free of dust before attaching lens caps to each lens. Do not allow dust to accumulate on your equipment and never store dirty equipment. Wipe down any dusty areas with a cleaning cloth or small brush.

  • Place all the lenses and other camera equipment in the designated areas of your camera bag.

  • Zip up the bag securely and store the camera at room temperature, in a dry location. If you are travelling, never let your equipment out of your sight; it could be stolen or broken as a result of mishandling.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't have a waterproof camera bag, try putting a few packages of silica gel into your camera bag. This will reduce moisture and protect your camera and lenses from possible moisture damage.
