It's easy to misplace something in a public place, and less easy to get it back, especially if you have been traveling. Often, you will need to enlist the help of someone who works at the mall, hotel, airport or other location where you left your belonging. Writing a letter to the right person can be an effective way to get assistance locating your item if you are not able to search for it in person.
Determine who the person is who can help you to find your lost item. If you have left one of your belongings at a hotel, for example, call the hotel and ask for the name of the person who is in charge of lost and found. Get the person's first and last name, as well as how to spell it correctly.
Put your contact information at the top of the page or to the left side of the paper. Include your name, address, phone number and email address.
Address the letter to the person who you've identified as being the most able to help you find your lost item.
Solicit the person's help in locating the object you lost. Provide details regarding where you last saw your belonging, the date and time you lost it and what it looks like.
Thank the person for their help resolving your problem, and include a phone number at which you can be reached. Bring the letter to a close and sign it.
Send the letter by registered mail and request signature confirmation. Registered mail allows you to track your letter, while adding signature confirmation will give you information about who signed for the letter. Sending a registered letter lets the recipient know that you consider the information it contains as worthy of immediate action. If no action is taken, you will know who received the letter and can follow-up with the company.
