How to Update Skype

More than 20 million people around the world trust Skype to handle their communications as of 2011. That's a large burden; you sometimes reveal very personal and very sensitive information about yourself and others while talking to your friends. That information could be embarrassing or outright damaging if it made it out into the open. One way that Skype helps ensure the sanctity of your conversations is by releasing periodic updates that serve to plug security holes and foil would-be hackers. Checking to see if you're running the most current version of Skype is simple -- and the same process updates Skype if needed.

  • Launch Skype.

  • Log in to your Skype account normally.

  • Click "Help" in the toolbar, then click "Check for Updates."

  • Confirm that you would like to download the updates if Skype finds your software isn't current.

  • Click "OK" to close the window after the updates finish downloading.

  • Restart Skype.
