How to Disable Printing in Adobe Acrobat

When creating a PDF in Adobe Acrobat, you can adjust the security settings so that it will only print if the user enters a password. By creating a password and not distributing it, you disable printing for anyone else who opens the PDF. Adobe does not store passwords associated with PDFs, so there are no options for password recovery if you forget the password.

  • Open the "Tools" menu. Click "Protection." Click the "Encrypt" menu and select "Encrypt with Password." Click "Yes" to enter the "Security Settings" window.

  • Select the option to "Restrict Editing and Printing of the Document" in the "Permissions" section.

  • Click the "Printing Allowed" menu, and select "None." Click the "Changes Allowed" menu. Set it to "Any Except Extracting Pages."

  • Click "OK." Confirm the password in the dialog box.
