How to Calculate the Surface Charge Density

Save

To calculate the density of anything, you simply divide the amount or number of the things by the area they occupy. To get human population density for a given location, you divide the total number of people by the area of the location. So to calculate the surface charge density of a solid, you divide the total surface charge by the surface area of the solid. The charge will be uniformly distributed over the surface of the solid.

  • Find the formula for the surface area of the type of solid using the link in the Resources section.

  • Use the formula to calculate the surface area of the solid.

  • Divide the total surface charge by the surface area of the solid to get the surface charge density.
