How to Make a Private Server in "Minecraft" Alpha

Save

"Minecraft" is a simple block-based building game developed by Mojang. Players harvest materials to build fortresses to protect themselves from zombies. Minecraft has single-player and multi-player modes. To play in multi-player mode, players must access a server designed for several players. These servers can be public or private. Public servers are open to any player with the server information, while private servers are only open to people approved to access them.

Setting up the Server

  • Download the Minecraft Server software from the official Minecraft website.

  • Make a new folder called "Minecraft Server." Drag the files from the zipped folder you downloaded into this new folder.

  • Right-click "Start server.bat" and select "Run as Administrator."

  • Let the program run until it says "Finished." It will create several new files in the folder. Exit the program once it is finished.

  • Open the "server.properties" file in Notepad.

  • Change the line that reads "public=true" to "public=false." Customize any of the other options (max players, server name) the way you'd like.
