How to Uninstall the Vista Sidebar

The Vista sidebar is part of the Vista operating system and should not be uninstalled. It is best to disable the sidebar. By disabling it, the sidebar will no longer use any CPU or memory resources. If you decide to uninstall the sidebar then follow the directions carefully. If you are not a professional and make any mistakes, then there is a chance of causing harm to the operating system, and you may have to reinstall Vista.

Disable Sidebar

  • Right-click the "Sidebar" and select the "Properties" option.

  • Uncheck the "Start Sidebar when Windows starts" check box.

  • Click the "OK" button.

  • Right-click "Sidebar" and select the "Close Sidebar" option. This will close the Sidebar and it will no longer start when your computer starts up.

Uninstall Sidebar

  • Log in to Windows as "Administrator."

  • Click the "Start" button and click the "Computer" link.

  • Double-click the "C:" drive and then double-click the "Program Files" folder.

  • Right-click the "Windows Sidebar" folder and click "Properties" from the menu.

  • Click the "Security" tab and then the "Advanced" button. Click the "Owner" tab. Select "Administrators" from the "Change owner to" section and click the "Apply" button. Click the "OK" button.

  • Click the "Permissions" tab and click the "Edit" button. Select the "Administrators" option from the list and click the "Edit" button. Click the "Full Control" check box to give you full access to the folder, and click the "OK" button. Click the "OK" button in the "Advanced Security Settings for Windows Sidebar" window. Click the "OK" button in the "Windows Sidebar Properties" window.

  • Right-click the "Windows Sidebar" folder and select the "Delete" option from the menu. Click the "Yes" button if a confirmation window opens.

Tips & Warnings

  • Backup your computer with System Restore by creating a restore point before uninstalling the Sidebar. To create a restore point do the following:
  • Click the "Start" button, select "All Programs," click "Accessories," click "System Tools" and click "System Restore."
  • To uninstall the Vista Sidebar you must bypass all the Windows Vista security in place to protect your computer. If at anytime during this process you are unsure about any steps, do not continue. Read the steps thoroughly first, and perform a test run through the steps without clicking the "Apply" or "OK" buttons.
