How to Make Google Voice Work in an iPhone

Save

If you have multiple phone numbers, Google Voice can synthesize those into a single number. Whenever anyone calls that number, the call is forwarded to all of the other phones on your account, such as your home, business and cell phone, so all of your phones ring instead of just one. Google Voice also offers cheap international calling, voice mail transcription, free texting, custom greetings and integration with your contacts. To set up Google Voice on your iPhone, you must first register a Google Voice account on your computer, and then download the free Google Voice app.

Set Up Google Voice Account

  • Type www.google.com/voice into your Internet browser's URL bar.

  • Search for a Google Voice number in the dialog box that appears. You can search by area code, city, ZIP code, words or numbers. You can also opt to use your current cell number and simply use Google Voice for voicemail. Once you have chosen a number, click "Continue."

  • Enter a four-digit PIN number. Click "Continue."

  • Enter the phone number for the phone that you want to ring when anyone calls your Google Number, and select the type of phone. You can add more phones later. Click "Continue."

  • Confirm your phone by clicking "Call Me Now" and entering the displayed code.

iPhone Setup

  • Tap the "App Store" icon on your iPhone's home page.

  • Tap the search button, and type "Google Voice" into the search bar.

  • Tap the app in the list that appears. Tap "Free," and when the button turns green, tap it again. Enter your Apple ID and password.

  • Tap the app once the progress bar for the download disappears.

  • Tap "Sign In," and then enter your Gmail account address and password. Tap your mobile number to begin using the app.
