How to Find a USB Thumb Drive Class ID or the Device ID

A USB thumb drive has a Class ID and Device ID embedded into its solid-state memory. You can use a free disk utility to access this information. The disk utility pulls out the information from the USB thumb drive that the computer's operating system monitors but does not share with the user. The process is straightforward and does not pose any risk to the computer's operating system or the thumb drive.

  • Plug the USB thumb drive into an open USB port on the computer.

  • Click the "X" in the upper-right corner of the "New Hardware Found" pop-up window when it appears.

  • Launch the default Web browser by selecting it from the "Start" > "All Applications" pop-up menu. Download a free USB device-viewing program (for example, USBDeview) to the desktop. Double-click the file once it has downloaded to begin the installation procedure. Follow the menu commands to install the program onto the computer's hard drive.

  • Launch the USB device-viewing program by selecting it from the "Start" > "All Applications" pop-up menu. Click on the USB thumb drive's name in the left column of the window that appears.

  • Click on the lower-right corner of the window. Drag the corner toward the lower-right corner of the screen to enlarge the window. Release the window when you can see all of the tabs at the top of the window.

  • Read the Class ID or Device ID number for the USB thumb drive beneath the appropriate tab.
