The component video format produces a high-quality picture by keeping color information on separate signals. A high-speed digital interface used to transfer information between computer systems produced by Apple goes by the name of FireWire. Sony names the process iLink and Texas instruments calls it Lynx. To convert component video to FireWire, the video must first be digitized and then processed to be transported on the interface bus. To do this, you must purchase a converter compatible with your computer. Expect to pay over $1000 as of the time of publication.

- Computer with FireWire port
- Component video to FireWire converter
- Component video and FireWire cables
- BNC connectors
- RCA-to-BNC adapters
Connect the Y, Cr and Cb signals from the composite video source to the converter. You may need BNC connectors or RCA to BNC adapters. Different countries may use different terminology for the three composite signals, but one signal carries green, sync and brightness information, another carries red information and the third carries blue. Be sure to connect the correct signal to the correct input jacks.
Connect the converter to your computer via the means provided by your particular converter model and manufacturer.
Follow the manufacturer's instructions for both your converter and your computer and its operating system. Converters can use Mac or Windows, depending on the manufacturer and model. Since models differ in design, no specific instructions will apply to all converters.
