How to Cut Water for a Fitness Competition

Save

Water cutting for a fitness competition can be dangerous if done inappropriately. However, you can look muscular and lean for your fitness competition by following directions that allow you to cut water safely. It is important to note that hormones govern the fluid balance within your body. Aldosterone is a hormone that flushes out water and sodium when it is low but promotes water gain and sodium when elevated. The key to water cutting before a fitness competition is through safe manipulation of this hormonal system.

  • Increase your water intake to about 2 to 3 gallons a day 10 days before a fitness competition. Keep your sodium levels the same in your diet. Increase your sodium levels if you've been avoiding sodium in your meals.

  • Decrease your sodium intake the day before the competition and keep consuming 2 to 3 gallons of water.

  • Cut your water out of the system 16 to 18 hours before your fitness competition. Sip water lightly if you get thirsty to keep you hydrated within this time frame. This will also prevent possible muscle cramps that may occur.

  • Reintroduce sodium back to regular levels in your diet after the fitness competition.
