How Delete Lines in Inkscape

Inkscape is a free graphics editor with features similar to those found in CorelDraw and Adobe Illustrator, which means that you may use the application to create scalable vector graphics. Each line you draw with Inkscape's Pen and Pencil tools may be deleted and edited. Clean up the artwork you make in Inkscape by deleting lines or line segments that diminish the quality your work.

  • Launch "Inkscape," select "File" from the main menu and click "Open" to browse for the vector art file in need of editing.

  • Choose if you want to delete an entire line or just a portion of one. Two tools within Inkscape allow you to delete segments of a line or its entire path.

  • Choose a tool that will delete the entire path by pressing the "F1" key, which activates the "Select and Transform Objects" tool. You may also press the "F2" key to delete a segment of a line with the "Edit Paths or Control Handles" tool.

  • Select the line or line segment with the tool. Selections made with the "Select and Transform Objects" tool cause a bounding box to appear. Selecting a path with the "Edit Paths or Control Handles" tool causes the line's bounding box to appear along with its anchors -- clicking on one of the anchors near the line's beginning or ending activates its section within the line so that you may delete it.

  • Press the "Delete" key to finalize deleting the line or line segment.

Tips & Warnings

  • Delete more than one line by holding the "Shift" key as you make your selections with the "F1" or the "Select and Transform Objects" tool.
  • If you are working with lines within a compound path, simultaneously press the "Shift," "Control" and "K" keys to break the art apart and delete lines within the object.
