How to Get Rid of Voles in Your House

Save

Also known as field mice, voles usually invade the yard and damage vegetation. They primarily eat plant materials, such as trees bark, bulbs, grasses and bulbs. Occasionally, voles eat snails, insects and animal remains. Voles prefer eating plant materials and generally don't do well indoors. As such, they rarely enter the house. When they do enter your house, you have several options for getting rid of them.

Things You'll Need

  • Peanut butter
  • Oatmeal
  • Apple
  • Snap traps
  • Live traps
  • Cardboard boxes
  • Mix equal parts peanut butter and oatmeal. Place the mixture in snap traps or live, Sherman or box-type traps. Alternatively, you can slice apples into small pieces and use them instead of the peanut butter-oatmeal mixture. These foods serve as baits to attract the voles.

  • Place the traps where you have seen the voles before, preferably perpendicular to the runways they commonly use.

  • Hold a cardboard box upside down and place it over each trap. Use a cardboard box that is large enough to allow the trap to properly work underneath.

  • Check the traps every morning and evening.

  • Discard dead voles and release live voles at least 1/2 mile away from your house. Choose a grassy area away from residential buildings to release the voles so they won't become a problem for other homeowners.

  • Reset the traps until you no longer have any voles inside the house.
