How Draw a Dumbwaiter

A dumbwaiter transports food.

A dumbwaiter is a kitchen aid for restaurants. Essentially, it is a food lift that goes between different levels of a hotel, restaurant or bar. If you are designing the layout of a new restaurant kitchen, then you might need to draw a dumbwaiter to illustrate its position in the space. A dumbwaiter is a very basic square shape, but you need to show that it is inset into the wall by shading the area appropriately .

Instructions

    • 1

Draw two horizontal lines across the bottom of the paper to represent the bottom of the kitchen wall.

    • 2

Sketch a large rectangle on the page. The bottom edge should be in-line with the bottom of the wall.

    • 3

Add a square inside the rectangle -- position it in the middle. It should be one third the length of the rectangle. This is the dumbwaiter hatch. Rule two horizontal lines inside the square, to illustrate the dumbwaiter's shelves. Space them out evenly.

    • 4

Show the texture of the metal that the dumbwaiter is constructed from. First, add a cross-hatching design in an L shape on the bottom left hand corner of the large rectangle. Draw a series of parallel horizontal lines, then overlap them with a series of vertical parallel lines. This will give the representation of a metallic surface.

    • 5

Add shading underneath the shelves, using a stumping technique. Sketch hatch lines underneath each shelf, then smudge them with your finger to remove the pencil lines and leave a blurry shadow.

    • 6

Illustrate plates, pots and pans spread out on the shelves of the dumbwaiter. Give the dumbwaiter character by staking up the plates, as if they have been left unwashed.

    • 7

Position a keypad to the right of the dumbwaiter window. Draw a small square, then buttons -- two circles and a square. Put an up and down arrow on each of the circles, and write "ON/ OFF" on the square.

Tips & Warnings

  • Detail kitchen cabinets or a waitress in the foreground of the drawing to give the dumbwaiter context.
