How to Convert a Powerpoint 2010 to Powerpoint 2007

Save

Every three or four years, Microsoft issues a new release of its flagship product, Microsoft Office, which includes PowerPoint in some versions. These are frequently compatible with older versions, but about every ten years, they release a completely new structure which doesn't share compatibility with older versions. PowerPoint 2010 is compatible with 2007, however all Microsoft Office products have the ability to save in older formats.

  • Save changes in the current format before converting a file into an older format. This will ensure that you don't lose any current functionality. Click on the disk icon on the toolbar to save it in the current location with the current name.

  • Click on the "Office" button in the upper left corner to save it in a new location or under a different name. Click on "Save as" in the drop down window. Change or choose the location using the scroll bar on the left of the "Save as" dialog. Change the file name in the "File name:" text box at the bottom

  • Click on the "Save as type:" drop-down menu to select a different format, including an older version of the software, such as PowerPoint 2007. This will also allow you the opportunity to change the name so there is no confusion between the 2007 file and the 2010 version.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you hover the mouse pointer over the "Save as" menu choice, a different pop-up window will display, allowing you to choose 2007 format. This brings up the same dialog as the steps above with a name created by the system and the correct file type already chosen.
  • If you open a PowerPoint document from an email and click the save icon, the file will be saved in a temporary location that is difficult to find. Always do a "Save as" operation on any new file opened from an email.
