How to Find Out an Operating System's Specs

If you have ever been asked for the specs on your operating system, you might have felt uneasy to only reply, "It's Windows." With just a little research, you can go well beyond that description and find out the Windows version, bit-type and even the hardware that it uses. Such hardware might include the processor type, amount of memory, graphics cards and hard drive sizes. All of this information is available directly from within Windows 7.

Instructions

Click the "Start" button, type "system" and click "System Information" in the search results.

    • 2

Look down the opening screen of the System Information window to see vital information pertaining to your system. You can see your operating system name, version number, system type, processor information and RAM. "System Type" may be a bit cryptic, but a system type listed as "x64-based PC" means you have the 64-bit version of Windows, and "x86-based PC" means you have a 32-bit version of Windows.
