1
Cut out a scooped neckline from a plain T-shirt (if the T-shirt doesn't already have one). Use a plate or other circular item to track the perimeter of the cut. The scooped neckline is more common among women, so if you are a man, you may wish to leave the neckline intact.

2
Turn your T-shirt or shirt over so you can see the back of it. Pinch an area of fabric between your thumb and forefinger three cm below the neckline.

3
Cut the fabric with fabric scissors around three cm below where you've gripped the material. You may want to cut another slit which runs across the breadth of the shirt, or confine the slits to the center of the shirt.

Repeat this process at three cm. intervals down the back of the shirt. Your shirt is now fashionably ripped and ready to be worn.

Tips & Warnings
Make small slits to begin with. You can always increase slit length later but can't reduce them.
Plain t-shirts or shirts work best with slits. Formal shirts and collared T-shirts are usually too refined to convincingly blend with fabric slits.
Avoid being over zealous when cutting. Slits can make a shirt look cool but over cutting can reduce your shirt to unwearable shreds.
Fabric scissors have extremely sharp blades so use with caution to avoid injury.
