How to Change a Google Group Name

Google Groups is a free service that supports discussions in many languages such as Hebrew, Greek, English, Thai, Swedish and Chinese. The service hosts discussion groups on a wide variety of topics, and when a group's topic focus changes, a group administrator may change the group's name to new name that better represents the group or inspires people from all around the world to join.

  • Plan for a group name change by discussing the idea with others and doing some research. Talk to long-standing, active and interested members about the name change. Listen to their feedback as you choose a new name for the Google group. Research word variations and pick the name that concisely conveys the group's purpose.

  • Change the group's old name to the new one. Log into your Google Groups account, navigate to your group's homepage and click the "Group Settings" link. Select the "General" tab and click "Edit." Delete the group's old name and enter its new one. Save the group's new name by clicking "Save Changes."

  • Announce the group name change to ensure that your existing members continue inviting new members by referring to the new group's name. Create a post about the name change. Click the "Discussions" link after making a new thread for the announcement and mark the thread as an important one by selecting the "More Options" link then clicking the "Display This Topic First." A pushpin icon will appear next to the announcement about your group's new name.
