How to Install a Wood Floor Over 1X9 Wood Planks

Wood flooring needs a firm, flat surface when it's installed, of a material that will hold nails. A plywood underlayment is the usual standard, but you can also lay a new wood floor directly over an old wood floor, provided the old wood floor isn't rotted or missing any boards. It's important that every plank of the old floor be completely secure before you start. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Go over the existing wood planks with your hammer and spiral flooring nails. Sink two nails, side by side, anywhere the planks move. Secure all of them completely.

    • 2

Lay out rows of paper underlayment, in courses, overlapping the edges slightly. Cut the rows as needed with a razor knife. Drive staples every 2 or so feet.

    • 3

Use a chalk snap line to set a line ½ inch out from the wall where you want to start. Lay the first floor board at one end of the line, with the grooved side facing the wall. Use your floor nailer to shoot nails every foot along both the edges of the board.

    • 4

Lay a second board off the end of the first one, connecting the two boards by their fittings. Nail it in the same manner. Repeat the process, laying the first course all along the line. Cut the last piece as needed on a miter saw.

    • 5

Install the second row of boards alongside the first row, fitting them tightly at the long edges. Shoot nails at an inward angle through the sides of the boards (not the top), one nail per foot. Cut the final board on a miter saw as needed.

    • 6

Repeat, building your way across the floor. Position the boards in a staggered configuration as you go.

    • 7

Cut the final course of boards lengthwise on a table saw to fit along the ending wall with a ½ inch of space there. Floor trim will cover the spaces.
