How to Update the Netgear WGR614v5 Wireless Router

Firmware is essential to the operation of most electronic devices. This software component provides users with greater control over the functions of computer-related devices. Firmware updates seek to fix bugs from previous firmware releases, and may even introduce new features. Though not every device's firmware is meant to be updated, Netgear's WGR614v5 wireless router can be upgraded -- and the firmware updates are fairly painless.

Instructions

    • 1

Download the latest copy of your WGR614v5's firmware from Netgear's support site (see Resource). Extract the firmware file into an empty folder on a computer that's connected to the router. Right-click on the firmware file, and then select the "Extract All" option from the menu that pops up.

    • 2

Open a Web browser on a computer that's connected to the WGR614v5. Log into the router's menu interface. Type "192.168.1.1" into the Web browser's address bar, and then hit the "Enter" key on your keyboard.

    • 3

Enter your username and password in their respective fields when prompted by the router's interface. The default username is "admin" and the default password is "password." Click "OK."

    • 4

Click on the "Router Upgrade" option, located beneath the "Maintenance" heading in the router's menu interface.

    • 5

Click on the "Browse" button, under the "Router Upgrade" heading. Locate the extracted firmware file, using the file explorer window that appears.

    • 6

Click on the "Upload" button to begin installing the firmware update in your WRG614v5. Allow the router to update. Reset before navigating away from the router's menu interface in your Web browser.
