How to Copy Search Results to a Text File

Save

Keeping track of your search engine competition is an important step in building your online business. Saving search results is an excellent way to monitor the titles, descriptions and links used by top-ranking sites. Alternatively, saving your search results might simply be a way of keeping a log of sources you used while conducting research. You can save your search results into a basic text file using software included with your computer.

  • Head to your favorite search engine and perform the search of your choice.

  • Select the search results by dragging your mouse down the list or by pressing "Ctrl" and "A." This will select the entire contents of the page.

  • Copy the search results to your clipboard by hitting "Ctrl" and "C."

  • Open a new notepad file. Click the Start button and type "Notepad" and then hit "Enter." Mac users can open Text Edit from their Applications folder.

  • Paste your search results into the notepad by pressing "CTRL" and "V."

  • Save your text file for future reference.

Tips & Warnings

  • It may be best to save your search results in an easier to manage format. You can do this by right clicking the page and selecting "Save as" in Chrome and Firefox, or by clicking "Export to Excel" in Internet Explorer.
