How to Prepare Your Kids for College Early in Life
High school students are usually the focus when it comes to thinking about being prepared for college. These teenagers are often well aware of what's at stake and will be visiting college websites and campuses in expectation. While all this is good, the problem lies in the fact that kids in lower grades are often left out of preparations and discussions about college. This is not to say that a kid in fourth grade should be focusing on what major their going to choose. However, parents and teachers should make the idea of going to college realistic for these young kids so that they will see it as an achievable goal early in life.

Inform your child in middle school of the courses that he needs to be taking so that he will be on the right track once he does get to high school. The U.S. Department of Education suggests that middle school students take algebra when they're in the eighth grade. They also recommend that by the ninth grade your child should be taking geometry and that courses like English and history should be taken annually. You can also let your child know that he can't go wrong with taking computer classes as these are also recommended. By making your child aware early on of the courses that need to be addressed, you can prevent him from falling short of what colleges will be expecting of him down the road.

Encourage your child to get in the habit of reading at an early age. Students that do well at taking tests are usually the ones that have a history of reading a lot of books. The thing that discourages many kids from reading is when they are forced to read books that were assigned to them at school in which they have no interest. This can make reading seem boring and pointless. However, by giving your child a book that fits her interest it can have a much more positive effect. If she doesn't read it right away then don't force her. Instead be patient, discuss books that you are currently reading and be persistent. If reading does take hold and become a habit for her, then this will really help prepare your child for college.

Talk to your kids about the great things that going to college can do for a person's life. This is important when preparing your kids for college because it allows them to grasp the fact that college is a portal to life's opportunities. Students may be very interested in the man that digs up dinosaur bones for a living. However, when they find out that he had to attend college first it can have a much greater affect on them. Kids will be much more willing to work and study hard when they realize the doors that will open for them after they've finished college.
