How to Connect a DSL Modem and Hub
DSL is one of the main ways to bring high speed Internet to a personal computer. The service uses ordinary phone wire, allowing it to be used even when the telephone also transmitting voice signals. A service technician must install a special phone jack in a home for DSL service, and after that it is very easy to connect the computer to the Internet.

Plug a standard phone cable into the DSL wall outlet and the back of the modem or hub. There is only one receptacle for the phone cable on the modem or hub. Plug the modem power supply into the wall, and into the back of the modem.

Connect an Ethernet cable from the modem or hub to the Ethernet receptacle on the back of the computer. There may be anywhere from one to four places to connect the cable on the back of the hub. It doesn't matter which is used. If there is only one place to put the cable that means that only one computer can be hardwired to the hub. Any other computers will require you to purchase an additional hub unless the modem or hub and computers are capable of wireless connections.

Follow the instructions in the user manual that comes with the modem or hub and log on to the specific Web page it directs you to after you load your browser on the computer. Some manufacturers provide specific programs on a CD disc to assist with the configuration, while others depend solely upon the web. If you need to load a CD disc, do so when the instructions tell you to.

Answer the questions the Web page asks concerning your connection and service. The software will then download information to your modem or hub to configure it to work with the Internet and your service provider.

Install a wireless connection on your Windows 7 computer by going to "Start," then "Control Panel," select "Network and Sharing Center," and then click "Connect to a Network."

Click on the name of the modem, or the name you gave it during configuration, which will be listed on the screen as an active network.

Enter the security number, or WEP number, that is listed on the side or underneath your modem or hub. The computer will do the rest of the work to configure itself to accept the wireless network.

Tips & Warnings
Installing a wireless connection between the hub and the computer requires the computer have a wireless capability. Check the specifications that came with your computer.
