How to Operate the Apple iPad

How to Operate the Apple iPad thumbnail
The iPad is a mini-computer, book reader and entertainment center that operates like a grown-up iPod.

In the iPad, Apple has a lightweight, simple computer that can handle many productivity apps, play movies and run games. In terms of use, the iPad is like the iPhone or iPod touch, only with a bigger screen and no phone. The beauty of the iPad is that you do not have to do much to get it running. It automatically interfaces with nearby Wi-Fi networks, so all you really need to know to get started is to learn what the few buttons do on the device.

Instructions

  1. Basics

    • 1

Press the "Wake/Sleep" button to wake the iPad. If your iPad is off, press and hold the button until you see the Apple icon. Your iPad will start up in a few seconds.

    • 2

Press the "Wake/Sleep" button to put your iPad to sleep. To turn it off, hold the button down until the "Slide to power off" slider appears on the screen. Slide it to shut off the iPad.

    • 3

Press the "Home" button on the front of the iPad to back out of the app you are running and return to your menu. Slide the "Slide to unlock" slider to get started. If you are on the menu, pressing this button brings up the Search page, where you can search for apps or data by typing it.

    • 4

Press the "Up/Down" volume button on the side of the unit to raise or lower the volume.

    • 5

Turn the "Screen Rotation Lock" switch above the volume buttons to keep the screen from rotating as you move the iPad around.

    • 6

Turn the unit from a horizontal to a vertical alignment or vice versa to automatically rotate the screen.

    Using Apps

    • 7

Press on an app to start it up. Press the "Home" button to back out of the app.

    • 8

Slide your finger across the main screen to move to a new app menu page.

    • 9

Press the "Home" button twice to show apps that are currently running in a bar on the bottom of the screen. Press an app to resume it.
