Webcams are quite simple to set up with your computer.

With the popularity of video chatting right from your email account and on sites including Skype, many new computers come with a video camera built in. If you have one that doesn't have a built in camera, getting the needed hardware won't cost you an arm and a leg. In 2011, a new camera of this type -- also called a webcam -- may cost you 10 bucks. As an added plus, it's also relatively easy to set up on your computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Install the software that came with your webcam. Typically, this includes inserting a software disc into your computer and following the prompts given by your computer's Installation Wizard. Restart your computer if instructed.

    • 2

Plug in the cord from the camera to a USB port on your computer. Place the camera in a location that allows you to be seen. The typical place is on top of the computer monitor.

    • 3

Log on to the Internet and navigate to the chat program of your choice.

    • 4

Choose someone to chat with, then initiate the video chat function of the program by pressing the "videocamera" or similar button in the chat program. Look for yourself in the corner of the video chat window to see whether the camera is working.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many computers are able to recognize the webcam automatically, without the need for the installation software that comes with many webcams. If you don't want to install any new software on your computer, try connecting the webcam to the computer first, then see if you're able to use it for chatting without the install.
