How to Make a Mock Cami

How to Make a Mock Cami thumbnail
Making a mock cami is a quick sewing project.

If you have an existing cami in your closet that is too short and rides up to where it is uncomfortable, don't throw it away. Consider a simple sewing project that will turn it into a useable second layer that's fashionable and comfortable. It's easy to turn that too-short cami into a mock-cami top. You can also do the same thing with a pretty piece of flowered or silk fabric that has a lace edging.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 yard cami material
  • Needle
  • Thread
  • Straight pins
  • Velcro strips, 2 inches long by 1/2 inch to 1 inch wide

Instructions

Lay out the material you plan to use for the cami and decide on the size and shape of the mock cami top. An easy way to do this is to take several of the tops you plan to wear it under and use one for an example. Lay out one of these tops on a flat surface.

Take a piece of plain white paper and lay it in the V-shaped opening. Using a pencil, trace the inside of the V-neckline. Remove the paper and add two to three inches on the sides of the V-shape. This will ensure your mock-cami doesn't slip out of the top.

    • 2

Cut out the shape from the paper and lay the paper on top of your material. If you want to pin the paper to the material, do it before cutting. Be sure you arrange the cami material so any lace or decorative trim will show at the top.

Moving slowly along the paper, cut out the material in the shape of the mock cami top. When done, remove the paper from the material. The cami should be in a V-shape.

Thread a needle and prepare to attach the Velcro strips at the top corners of the V-shape. The strips will attach around your bra straps underneath your top. Velcro strips should be about 2 inches long by 1/2-inch to 1-inch wide.

Sew one end of the Velcro strip to the cami top on both sides. When done, test by first putting on the mock cami top and ensuring the Velcro strips attach well to the bra, providing room for movement. Finish by putting the top on over the cami.
