How to Install a Second RAM Chip

Random access memory, sometimes referred to as "hardware memory," is installed on little removable cards inside the computer. A computer system relies on RAM for fast operating storage when it is powered on. Generally, the more RAM a computer system has, the faster it operates. You can install a second RAM chip into the computer to increase the general operational performance of the system and extend its useful life.

Instructions

    • 1

      Power off the computer.

    • 2

Remove the side cover of the computer case. Some cases use screws while others use a lever on the back of the case.

    • 3

Gently insert the second RAM stick into an open RAM slot. The memory is notched so it can only be installed in a single direction. The plastic memory retention clips snap when the memory is installed properly. Never force a stick of RAM into the slot.

    • 4

Replace the side cover of the computer case.

    • 5

Power on the computer. The second stick of RAM is recognized and configured automatically.
