How to Open an HP 49 Print Cartridge to Refill It
People looking for an alternative to expensive replacement printer cartridges commonly refill empty cartridges with inkjet refill kits. The HP 49 cartridge is a tri-color cartridge you can refill with a widely available refill kit. Before you can inject ink directly into the empty HP 49, however, you must first remove the cartridge's cover. It is easy to remove in a matter of minutes.

Take the empty HP 49 cartridge out of the printer as instructed in the user guide.

Hold the cartridge upright in one hand, then fit a thin metal blade underneath the green cap and slowly pry it up.

Work the blade around the entire cartridge and continue slowly prying until the seal is broken and you can manually pull off the top.
