Instructions

    • 1

Select a shrub that is native to your area or will grow well in your U.S. Department of Agriculture zone.

    • 2

Choose an area of your yard that suits the needs of the colorful shrub you choose. Some shrubs need full sun, such as spirea, or partial shade, such as fothergilla. Many shrubs need well drained soil.

    • 3

Remove all the weeds and rocks from the soil. Add 4 to 6 inches of compost to the surface and work it in to a depth of 18 to 24 inches.

    • 4

Dig a hole as deep as the shrub's root ball and three times as wide. Place the shrub in the hole and loosen the roots.

    • 5

Fill the hole with soil and pat the soil down. Water the shrub well for 10 minutes.
