How To Remove Roof Insulation

If your home heating and cooling costs are rising steadily from year to year, energy prices may not be the only factor. Another culprit could be your roof insulation. As roof insulation ages, it becomes thinner and less effective in repelling outside elements while trapping heated and cooled air in the home. To lower your energy costs, you can replace the roof insulation. Prior to rolling or blowing in new insulation, you'll have to remove the old roof insulation. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Put on goggles, gloves, a respirator and overalls or other protective clothing before taking out the old roof insulation. These garments will protect your skin and air passages when taking out the old insulation.

    • 2

Place a ladder under the attic entrance and climb up with a shovel. Begin rolling up and shoveling out the old roof insulation. Stuff the removed insulation in large lawn bags and knot the lawn bags shut.

    • 3

Vacuum the attic space thoroughly with a shop vacuum to get up any small roof insulation pieces and to take up any rodent droppings along with dead insects. Empty the vacuum as necessary, pouring the contents into lawn bags and tying them shut.

    • 4

Take the old roof insulation to a recycling center. To find a recycling center near you, point your web browser to Earth911.com.
