Prevent ruining your feather quilt in the washer by following all directions for washing safely.

Washing a feather quilt is similar to washing a down comforter or anything else that contains feathers. The hardest part about cleaning a feather quilt is the weight. When the quilt is wet, the feathers are extremely heavy, which can damage a too-small washing machine or even rip the exterior fabric of the quilt. Take care to use a large-capacity washing machine and follow all directions to prevent damage from occurring. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Wait to clean the feather quilt until a sunny day. You will need to dry the quilt in the sunshine, and there is a chance the quilt will mildew if you try to dry it on a cloudy day. Start washing the quilt in the morning by 10 a.m. to allow enough time for the quilt to dry before the sun goes down.

Treat any stains on the quilt with a stain remover. Wait five minutes before placing the quilt in the washer.

    • 3

Add one scoop of a mild laundry detergent. Fill the washing machine with cold water. Move the quilt around inside the washing machine with a broom handle to distribute the soap throughout the water and prevent it from sticking to one part of the quilt. Only swish the quilt around while the washer is full.

Lay several towels onto a grassy area or patio in the sun. Make sure the towels make a large enough space for the quilt to rest on. Weight down the corners of the towels with rocks so they don't blow away.

    • 5

Lay the quilt over the towels. Allow the quilt to dry for about three hours, then flip it and allow it to dry for three more hours. Bring the quilt inside when it's completely dry. You can fluff the quilt inside the dryer for a few minutes on a low-heat setting to ensure all of the feathers are completely dry.
