How to Find a Translation Job

The Internet is a good place to find translation jobs. Whether you are looking for a permanent translating position or a temporary freelance gig, online job boards are the place to start finding the right translation position. Couple your online job search efforts with in-person networking with those in your community, and you are likely to find a translation job that meets your needs.

Instructions

Write a resume that highlights your translation qualifications and experiences. Emphasize any professional translator certifications you have, such as Certified Translator from the American Translators Association. You will use this resume and information from it repeatedly when you fill out online job board profiles and respond to individual job postings.

Join a few translation job boards. Some include Translator Pub and ProZ. You can also join language-specific job boards to find translation jobs. Jobs are listed regularly on these sites. Apply to the ones for which you qualify, checking back with the site often for updates and new jobs.

Join a regional translator association. Some states have translator associations, as do some regions of states and individual cities. You will be listed as a professional translator with the association. Those who want to hire a translator may call on you to work for them. Also attend networking, educational and social events of the association. Meeting new people and forming relationships with other translators in the area can help you learn more about local employers and about who is hiring at any given time.

Make a list of language service companies, listed on the American Translators Association website, that are hiring. You can search by specialization and languages. Click on the companies' names that interest you. The companies' profiles list whether they are currently accepting resumes.
