Getting your abdominal muscles to achieving that six-pack look takes a combination of discipline, correct diet and workouts that target the abdominal muscles. It is a common frustration for people who work out regularly and eat a healthy diet to have trouble obtaining a six pack. However, there are certain things you can do to help you get and keep a flat six pack.

      Monitor your diet. The foods you eat play a major part in obtaining a six pack. Certain foods such as alcohol, fast food, refined sugar, pasta, dairy, processed foods and bread products can hinder your progress and should be reduced in your overall diet.

      Increase your intake of foods that promote a flat six pack. Healthy foods like lean protein, fruits, vegetables and whole grain carbohydrates should make up a large part of your diet. Fill your kitchen with foods such as eggs, soy beans, almonds and oatmeal to help you gain a six pack. Drink an adequate amount of water to keep your body hydrated. A minimum of eight glasses a day should be part of your diet.

      Do cardiovascular workouts. Also known as cardio workouts, they help your body burn fat, which helps in flattening your abs and making your muscles visible. Aim for three to four cardio workouts a week. Keep your workouts interesting by switching them up with different activities. For example, if you are a runner, add circuit training to your workouts instead of always running at an even pace.

      Add specific workouts for your abdominal muscles, or abs, to your regular workout routine. While the crunch is known for targeting abs, adding a variety of crunches to your regular workout routine will target your abs and keep you motivated at the same time. For example, you can switch between traditional crunches and doing crunches on an exercise ball. Exercises that also target your abs include lying leg lifts and reverse curls for the lower abs.

  • Don't get discouraged. Obtaining a six pack does not happen overnight and takes time and effort. Don't give up on your diet and exercise plans because you don't see results right away.
