How to Change the Download Open With Options on Firefox

Mozilla Firefox uses the plug-ins and applications installed on your computer to open files you download on the Internet. The first time you open a new type of file, Firefox prompts you with a dialog that asks you to select an action. You can tell Firefox to always open this type of file with a specific application in this window. If you want to change the open with option later, you can do it from Firefox's preferences window. You can select a different application or plug-in or configure Firefox to always prompt you for an action.

Instructions

1. Click the "Firefox" menu button at the upper-left corner of the screen and click "Options."

2. Click the "Applications" icon at the top of the Options window.

3. Click a type of file in the list.

4. Click the box to the right of the file and select an action such as "Always Ask," "Save File" or a specific application. If you want to add a custom application, click "Use Other," click "Browse" and browse to the application on your computer.

5. Click "OK."

Tips & Warnings

• Click the "Tools" menu and click "Options" on Firefox 3.6 and earlier versions of Firefox.

• The applications list only shows file types you've configured actions for. Firefox adds new file types to this list as you encounter them on the Internet.
