Assist your students with choosing fabric and patterns. You may want students to work together on a project or allow them to choose their own projects. The first garment or accessory should be a simple pattern. Explain what kinds of fabrics are used for each type of project. You may wish to take your students to a fabric store to explore various fabrics.

Show your students how to lay and pin pattern pieces on top of fabric. Pay attention to fold lines and the way fabric stretches. Explain the importance of marking the fabric with notches. Use sewing scissors to cut the fabric.
