How to Make Your Own Dot Com

Creating your own website with its own web address might seem like a daunting task. Once you understand the basics, though, it is really a pretty simple process, much like setting up a new phone number. The only difference is that you don't select a phone number; it is assigned to you. You get to choose a domain name yourself.

Instructions

  1. Setting Up Domain

    • 1

Make a list of names you would be willing to use for your website. A two- or three-word domain name may be preferable because most desirable single-word domain names are no longer available or cost a lot of money. Your domain name can be up to 63 characters.

    • 2

Find a domain name registrar and start plugging in your different domain name ideas. One of the most popular registrars is GoDaddy.

    • 3

Select the domain name if it is available and click "Continue to Registration."

    • 4

Enter your personal information. This information will be accessible by anyone who looks up your domain information, which is publicly available.

    • 5

Select the duration of your registration. This can be anywhere from six months to 10 years.

    Linking Domain to Hosting

    • 6

Click on "My Products" on the GoDaddy home page and select "Domain Manager."

    • 7

Select the domain name you just registered form the drop-down menu.

    • 8

Click on "Nameservers" and select "Set Nameservers."

    • 9

Select "I have a hosting account with these domains" and click "OK." If you have hosting with a different provider, enter the two or more nameservers you received from your hosting provider.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check out services like snapnames.com if there is a domain name you want to buy that is owned by someone else. This service allows you to snap up the domain name right when it expires.

  • Consider contacting the owner of a domain name if you really want it. You may be able to negotiate a deal, especially if the owner is not using the domain name. You can find out who owns a domain name by searching it at whois.net
