How to Ghost a SATA Hard Drive

"Ghosting" a SATA drive allows a copy of all of the files, data and settings stored on the drive to be duplicated and stored on an external drive for safekeeping. "Ghost" is an acronym for "General Hardware-Oriented System Transfer." Norton's Ghost software provides users with a reliable way to ghost drives, preserving their data in the event of a drive failure. All that's required is an external backup disk.

    • 1

Plug the external drive into the computer's USB port. Turn the drive on using the power switch. USB ports are typically located on the side of a laptop computer and on the front of desktop computers.

    • 2

Insert the DVD containing the Norton Ghost software into the computer and follow the on-screen installation instructions. Alternatively, if the software was downloaded from the Norton Website, navigate to the download location and launch the installation program. If the Norton software was downloaded, it's saved in the computer's "downloads" folder. See Resources for a link to the Norton download page.

    • 3

Launch the Norton Ghost software from the computer's "Programs" menu. Click the Start menu (the Windows-logo button in the lower-left-hand corner of the screen), then click "Programs" to access the programs menu. Click the shortcut for the Norton Ghost software and select the icon labeled "Run or manage backups."

    • 4

Select the option to "Define new" from within the "Run or manage backups" main menu.

    • 5

Select the "Back up my computer" icon now displayed. Click "Next" to select the SATA drive to back up.

    • 6

Choose the external disk when prompted for a "backup destination" by clicking on the name of the external drive. External drive names are typically an abbreviated version of the drive manufacturer's name.

    • 7

Click "Run backup now" to copy the entire contents of the SATA drive onto the external disk. Once the operation is completed, the software returns to the home screen.
