How to Transfer AT&T Phones to Vonage
AT&T and Vonage each offer home phone service to subscribers across the United States. In order to transfer to Vonage, you must have DSL or high-speed Internet access in your home. Local number portability enhances transferring your service as it allows you to keep your current phone number when switching providers. In order to qualify to keep your number, you must remain in the local area from which the number originates.

Navigate to the Vonage website and click the "Keep existing number" tools in the Tools To Help You Decide box on the bottom of the landing page. Enter your AT&T phone number and click "Check now." You will be notified in the box if you will be able to keep your current phone number.

Click the "Order now" tab at the top of the landing to select your Vonage calling plan. Then click "Order now" under the phone service plan you would like to use through Vonage. The company offers local and international phone service starting at $9.99 a month as of April 2011. You will be taken to the Plan Setup screen. Click "Keep my current number" in the "Transfer Your Phone Number or Get a New One" box to keep your current phone number.

Enter your personal information to create a new account. You will be required to enter your address for emergency service purposes. Click "Confirm address," agree to the terms of use for 911 dialing and "Continue." Enter payment information and create an online account and click "Preview order." You will be taken to an order confirmation screen to review your information. Click "Order now" to complete your transaction and transfer your service.

Contact AT&T to ensure that your service is canceled and discuss any outstanding billing. If you are under contract with AT&T, there will be additional fees for early termination. Number portability with Vonage may take up to 10 business days to complete.
