How to Compare Catholics & Baptists

How to Compare Catholics & Baptists thumbnail
Each faith group recognizes a different focus upon the Bible.

Despite the many similarities and points of agreement that exist between denominations in Christianity, there are also many fundamental differences. In the 21st century, many of these distinctions still remain between Baptists and Catholics, but each denomination generally advocates for dialog, partnership and mutual appreciation between the two faiths.

Instructions

    • 1

Distinguish between beliefs in Baptism. For Catholics, Baptism is typically a rite or sacrament which occurs during infancy and which usually requires the presence of parents and designated godparents. The early nature of the sacrament is an assurance that the child's life will be bound to Christ, the Holy Spirit as well as freed from original sin. Baptists believe that baptism should be reserved for adult members of the congregation, as only they have the capacity to make a conscious commitment to faith.

Identify institutions. Roman Catholics believe in the supremacy of the Vatican in Rome and thus, the pope. This is a hierarchical appreciation of authority which descends down to cardinals, bishops and local priests. Baptists have no such structure.

    • 3

Isolate Protestant traits in Baptist beliefs. Traditionally, Catholics have held that good works in this life are a principal way of achieving salvation. This entails performing charitable acts, helping others and focusing on the interactive conduct of your everyday life. As do many other Protestant groups, Baptists take issue with this claim by asserting that knowledge of the Bible and true faith are adequate vehicles toward salvation.

    • 4

Understand transubstantiation. Catholics, during every Mass, believe that the wafer and wine administered to the congregation literally transform into the body and blood of Jesus Christ. This is called transubstantiation and it is not a metaphorical or figurative statement. Baptists believe that this cannot occur due to the fact that Christ is in heaven and such a belief is blasphemous.

    • 5

Focus on prayer. Baptists, like many Protestants, believe that you can only pray to God using Jesus as an intermediary. Catholics, on the other hand, maintain that you can also pray to figures like Mary, the mother of Jesus, as well as a litany of saints who can intercede in helping with certain needs, problems or situations.

Study differing views on Purgatory. Before reaching heaven, Catholicism states that you may have to enter Purgatory, a staging point where sins are absolved before you progress to paradise. Baptists do not believe in Purgatory.
