Instructions for Building Speaker Enclosures

Instructions for Building Speaker Enclosures thumbnail
A circular saw is one of the tools you'll use to make a speaker enclosure.

A speaker enclosure provides both a secure mounting spot for your speaker and a chamber that provides the necessary back pressure for the speaker to operate properly. While speaker enclosure designs can be quite elaborate, simple designs will often work quite well. This small, rugged enclosure will provide a serviceable and sturdy home for a small 5 1/4-inch speaker, and will be very useful for a garage or workshop application.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/2-inch thick MDF (medium-density fiberboard)
  • Tape measure
  • Circular saw
  • Sandpaper
  • Wood glue
  • Wood screws
  • 5 1/4-inch car speaker
  • Drill
  • Speaker wire

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two rectangular 10-inch by 8-inch panels from your sheet of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) using a circular saw. Sand the edges to remove splinters or rough spots.

    • 2

Cut two rectangular 8-inch by 6-inch panels from your sheet of MDF. Sand the edges to remove splinters or rough spots.

    • 3

Cut two rectangular 9-inch by 6-inch panels from your sheet of MDF. Sand the edges to remove splinters or rough spots.

    • 4

Assemble the 9-inch by 6-inch panels and the 8-inch by 6-inch panels together to make a hollow box with perimeter dimensions of 10 inches by 8 inches. Secure the panels together with wood glue and wood screws at the joints.

    • 5

Cut an opening for your 5 1/4-inch speaker in one of the remaining 10-inch by 8-inch panels. Mount the speaker with screws in the speaker's perimeter tabs.

    • 6

Drill a hole in the center of the remaining 10-inch by 8-inch panel. Mount the panel onto the enclosure with wood glue and wood screws.

    • 7

Push the end of a piece of speaker wire into the hole, and pull it out the front of the box. Attach it to the terminals on the back of the speaker. Place the panel with the speaker onto the enclosure and attach with wood glue and wood screws.
